Vintage Reynolds Brass Double French Horn Contempora With Nickel Silver Trim
Vintage Reynolds Contempora Brass Double French horn. I have owned this brass Reynolds Contempora horn for many years and has served as a back up brass horn to my Conn 28D since the sound was similar. (See the “sisters” side by side in photo #6) Please Note: The Reynolds Contempora has the separate B flat tuning slide that is particularly helpful with intonation. Reynolds horns of this vintage were considered professional level instruments in the 1960s and 70s, competing with the Conn 28D in brass and the Conn 8D when finished in silver. Contempora horns were played in a number of major orchestras including the New York Philhamonic, Dallas Symphony and Detroit Symphony. According to the Reynolds website, this horn, serial number 211334 was manufactured in Fullerton, California in the 1970s. A few months ago , I had a comprehensive service performed on the horn at a pro shop that I have used on all my horns for a number of years. The horn was completely disassembled and chemically cleaned, inside and out, valves and slides all cleaned and serviced, strings replaced and springs and bumpers as needed, and slides tightened to a good snug fit. The valves are very quick, responsive and quiet, and the compression is quite good, with little to no leakage that would affect the playability of the instrument. The horn plays very well, responsive from pedal C to high C playing on my Moosewood B4 mouthpiece. This is a medium bore horn with a mellow rich sound, not overly dark, similar to my 300,000 series vintage Conn 28D brass horn. Upon visual inspection, this horn has had very little use for its age. There are very few dents or dings and while it is scratched, most of the lacquer is in very good condition, with the exception of some minor pitting in a number of areas, as shown in photo #12. It appears that the horn has never had a valve rebuild, as the valves do not appear to be silver plated. A brand new Cecilio #11 mouthpiece is included as well. Kindly look over all photos as they are an integral part of this listing.
