On offer is a very rare solid sterling silver compact hunting horn, made just after WW1 with an interesting engraving, dedicated to a female MFH. There are a few minor dimples and scratches, but nothing that really detracts from the piece significantly. It’s extremely well made and even the engraving would have been an expensive job in the day. WW1 was a tragedy that hung heavy in the hearts of people in the immediate years after the war, which you will get a sense of if you read any literature up until the end of the 1920s, and I think this is a touching tribute made just after the war. You may be able to research online about who the people are who’s names appear on the piece. The inscription reads: Mrs Cosset-Mayall M. During the absence of her husband on Active Service 1914 to 1918. MFH means Master of Fox Hounds. There is also a separate engraving of the silversmith (Kohler and Son), together with the full set of hallmarks including the 1919 date letter for London. A lot of research and family discussions over this walking stick. Here is what we believe. Wood base that was painted at one time. Some is worn off to show nice grain wood. Top is stag horn with engraved silver head. (can’t even guess what I believe to be the last letter). Bottom is silver that looks to be hand hammered on.
