Custom-Made Bb Single French Horn, Accusonic Leadpipe with Case and Mouthpiece
Silver and Brass Music Shop is a brick-and-mortar brass instrument restoration and repair shop located in Carson City, NV. This is a custom Bb single horn. This horn is one of a series of horns that our shop built to experiment with different possible wraps and layouts for 4-valve single Bb horns. This particular horn was designed to be responsive and light in style. The bell is a little bit heavier than the other horns in this series to give the horn more focus, and the 1st and 3rd slides have each had a knuckle removed to open up the airflow. This horn has a fairly small bell throat, which helps to give it a very light and direct sound with good projection. The horn feels very open, even when all four valves are depressed. The timbre tends toward the bright end of the spectrum. The left hand position is comfortable for large-handed people, but might be a stretch for people with smaller hands. The trigger has a very light throw, and it is designed to be quite springy and flexible. This makes it feel somewhat strange, as it is not like any 4th valve on other horns, but it is quite comfortable to use. If you would like to know what this horn sounds like then on YouTube. White valve cluster from 1947 with Holton valve caps, and the horn has 1920s-era German pfennig coins on the finger buttons for better grip. The 1st branch is from a. And the horn has a “Lafleur” bell. The leadpipe is a custom “Accusonic” style leadpipe, which gives surprisingly good warmth and responsiveness. Here is some more information about this type of leadpipe. Being that almost all of the parts are vintage, there are some imperfections throughout the horn. There are a few small dings and pings, and there is some scratching and etching throughout the horn. The valves move well with good compression and the slides all move of course. The minor flaws are visible in the pictures, and none of them affect the playability of the horn. This horn is not lacquered; therefore the horn will develop a lovely “raw brass” patina over time.
