This horn is an excellent Elkhart 8D, SN 918615. It has had a long, but good life, and is still in excellent working condition. The valves have good compression. The original leadpipe was replaced with a Lawson FB-110-125 leadpipe. The bell has been cut, and the flare was replaced with a custom flare by Atkinson Brass in California. The finger paddles have beautiful, excellent 1943 dimes professionally installed. I personally play an 8D, and this is one of the better Elkhart horns that I have played. The sound is huge and dark. The Lawson pipe and Atkinson flare have added a good deal of flexibility and power to the horn. The soft side of the volume is clear and easy. The louds are powerful. The tone is even between registers, and all registers play easily. This is a fantastic professional instrument that has many years of service left in it if cared for well. The metal of the horn is still in good shape. There is some minor evidence of removal of dents from the bell flare. There are some minor dents in the 3rd valve slide (Bb side), but nothing deep and nothing that is affecting tone. They are easily removable. I might remove them, and if I do, I will update the listing. Included is a very nice ProTec ProPac screw-bell case. It is used but in good condition. No mouthpiece is included, but a mouthpiece can be included upon request. Feel free to contact me with any questions you have! Silver and Brass Music Shop is a brick-and-mortar brass instrument restoration and repair shop located in Carson City, NV. This is a Conn 8D double french horn serial number. The 8D is Conn’s symphony double horn, and is constructed from solid nickel silver. This horn has had the original leadpipe upgraded to a yellow brass Lawson. The original bell was also replaced with a modern Conn 8DS bell. Finally, the horn has been fitted with a Conn hand rest and an Alexander adjustable pinky hook. The horn plays very well. The valves move well with good compression and the slides all move of course. As for the aesthetic condition of this horn, there are a few small dings and pings as well as some isolated areas of light pitting, etching, and scratching throughout. The bell engraving reads: C. / CONN/ 8D/ U. The bell tail also has the cursive signature C. CONN engraved near the pinky hook. The leadpipe has: LAWSON engraved on the mouthpiece overpart as well as 108125 stamped where the leadpipe enters the tuning slide. All the minor imperfections are visible in the pictures, and none of them affect the playability of the horn. This instrument has been professionally cleaned in our shop and repaired to full playability. This horn is not lacquered; therefore fingerprints should be wiped off after use if the player wishes for the horn to stay as shiny as it is now; if they are not wiped off then the horn will develop a lovely patina. This instrument comes with a new ProTec ProPac screw-bell case and mouthpiece in good condition. How this horn plays. Full, dark and weighty sound with a smooth, rich tone. All registers of the horn speak well with a full-bodied low register and a clear high register. The Bb side of the horn has a slightly brighter timbre than the F side, and the horn has a wide dynamic range. All horns are located at Silver & Brass Music Shop. Carson City, NV 89703.
