Silver and Brass Music Shop is a brick-and-mortar brass instrument restoration and repair shop located in Carson City, NV. This is a custom Bb single horn. This horn is one of a series of horns that our shop built to experiment with different possible wraps and layouts for 4-valve single Bb horns. This particular horn was designed to be more traditional in style. The horn has a fairly standard wrap with the exception of the 1st valve slide, which has been opened up for better airflow. This horn has a compact and focused sound, definitely lending itself well to traditional horn playing, such as horn concertos and chamber orchestra work. The trigger has a very, very short throw-so short that you would almost swear that you hadn’t moved it at all. This takes some getting used to, but once you become accustomed to it it is nice that the throw is so short. If you would like to know what this horn sounds like then on YouTube. Olds & Son valve cluster, with a Conn leadpipe and a vintage bell made by Buescher. Being that almost all of the parts are vintage, there are some imperfections throughout the horn. There are a few small dings and pings, and there is some scratching and etching throughout the horn. The valves move well with very good compression and the slides all move of course. The minor flaws are visible in the pictures, and none of them affect the playability of the horn. This horn is not lacquered; therefore the horn will develop a lovely “raw brass” patina over time. The 8D is Conn’s large bore professional symphony double horn, and is built from solid nickel silver in a Kruspe wrap style. This particular horn also features a screw-bell configuration, so the bell is detachable for easy storage. The ring has standard Alexander threads, so the bell can be interchanged if the player desires a slightly different sound. The valves move well with good compression and the slides all move of course. As for the aesthetic condition of this horn, there are a few very small dings and pings as well as some areas of light, isolated, pitting, scratching, and etching throughout. The bell flare has the most significant pitting, etching, and scratching, especially on the inside. The bell engraving reads: C.
