Martin Trumpet Lge Bore Committee #3 Beautiful Horn With Schilke Mouthpiece
Today I have for sale an RMC Martin Committee Large #3 Bore in a silver finish. For those of you that already know the Martin Committee story, this will be old news, but for those of you that have never had the pleasure to play a vintage Martin Committee, particularly one of the far more rare large bore Committees, this will be new to you. In 1939, a “Committee” of some of the finest symphony trumpet players, along with Renold Schilke, Foster Reynolds, Elden Benge, and Vincent Bach – all of whom went on to design and manufacture their own lines of trumpets, met to collaborate on what was to be the ultimate trumpet. That same year, the Martin Band Instrument Company built this design and named it the “Martin Committee” after the name of the committee that designed this fine instrument. When the Martin Committee first entered the jazz scene in the early 1940’s, almost every professional trumpeter that you can name played the famous Martin Committee. The horn was made famous by Miles Davis, who played Martin Committees until they were no longer manufactured, and contracted with Martin to continue to build the Committee model just for him. And Miles was not alone. Chet Baker, Maynard Ferguson, Roy Eldridge, Lee Morgan, Dizzy Gillespie, Conti Candoli, and an international host of other trumpet professionals played the Martin Committee. It has been said that just about the only professional player who did NOT play the Martin Committee was Clifford Brown, who played a Blessing Super Artist. Throughout the golden age of jazz, through the 1940’s, 1950’s, and the 1960’s, the Martin Committee was considered THE HORN for trumpet playing professionals. Much later, trumpeter Chris Botti bought a vintage 1939 Martin Committee Handcraft (the horn he still plays to this very day by the way) and found that the Martin Committee had the lush, deep, smoky, honey dipped sound that one just could not duplicate in a modern horn, and has made the Martin Committee famous all over again. I have owned many vintage Martin Committees. My first horn was a beautiful 1946 Martin Committee medium bore. I then was lucky enough to find a 1948 Martin Committee Deluxe if the Large #3 bore, AND a 1960 Martin Committee Large #3 bore. Along the way, I was fortunate enough to acquire several different Martin Committee trumpets. The medium bore Committees are very nice playing horns, don’t get me wrong, but the very best playing horns are the LARGE BORE horns, and they are very hard to come by. What is an RMC Committee? The Martin Band Instrument Company changed hands over the years, and RMC, which some claim to represent as the “Roundtable of Musical Craftsmen” was actually the Richards Music Company, that had recently taken over the Martin Company. Some say that the RMC Martin Committees didn’t have the same sound as the original Martin Committees, but I just don’t believe that. Having owned at least 6 large bore Committees (1 Handcraft Committee, 3 regular large bore Committees, 1 Deluxe large bore Committee, and 1 RMC Committee), I can truthfully say that this horn, this RMC Committee plays superbly and has a sound like my other Committees, that unmistakable, smoky, dark, honey dipped sound that the Martin Committee is well known for. T hese are very fine playing instruments and they are no longer made! It took me years of searching to be able to find a large bore Committee in good shape. NEW Wisemann DTR-500SP New C Silver Trumpet with Gold Trim Great Value Horn
Finally got a batch in, so order early. These horns turned out to be VERY popular. I can tell when several were. This is a great value in a C trumpet, Silver Plated with Gold Trim. NOTE: The picture shows a variable 3rd valve slide ring. The latest batch comes with a FIXED ringer (as do most professional horns). First, since there are many folks who are looking for “a trumpet” and not sure what to get. So I would like to mention that if you’re looking for a general trumpet for a high school student, or a new starting player: THIS IS NOT WHAT YOU WANT. Trumpets come in various “keys” In the US the vast majority are “B-flat” when the trumpet is played in it’s natural mode it’ll play the same pitch as a b-flat on a piano. The music written for the B-flat trumpet will compensate for this difference so the fingerings stay the same when you’re looking at the music, (Hopefully that’s not too confusing). However the C trumpet is often used in orchestral music. Some players like to have one around when they are playing music written in C and don’t want to transpose in their head, or they find the key easier to play with a C trumpet. This was brought into inventory after I got several e-mails from various folks who played one and wanted to see if I had them in stock. Well at the time I didn’t, so I brought some in not only to expand the offering, but also to offer up to the college player and others who need a “C” trumpet but. It won’t be their primary instrument (though, no reason it couldn’t serve that purpose). While I like to be able to talk in great details about the trumpets I sell, I’m not a professional player and I rarely play a C trumpet. What I can say is this is a well built horn. It’s responsive and STAINLESS STEEL VALVES. (Some folks I’m very nervous sending a new horn out, but it’s so gratifying to get a thumbs up). So, for the College student who is more a jazz/commercial player but needs a C trumpet, for the weekend warrior who needs a horn for church music, for the advancing high school student needing a new challenge. As a note, one of things I find the most difficult transition to the C trumpet is it’s SO close to the B-flat, but not their. It’s very hard to think to the center of the tone. There’s also a great tendency to overblow the horn. I even find an E-flat easier since it’s further off. So play this horn lightly until comfortable. Give it it’s own fair shares of drills and exercises. Especially don’t just show up to an orchestral rehearsal with a freshly acquired C and try playing it cold in front of people. The trumpet comes with a lightweight but strong case, It has Yellow Brass Lead pipe and bell. Bell Measures 4.92 inches. Sure a Mouthpiece is included. And let’s not forget the gold trim. Antique Scottish Rams Horn Snuff Mull Box with Silver Lid & Queen Anne Shilling
1534 Scottish Horn Snuff Mull. A large and particularly interesting Scottish snuff mull. It has a curled rams horn body and is set with a substantial silver lid which has chased and repousse work of thistles. The top is set with a large stone which is perhaps a citrine. There is also a dedication plaque in the shape of shield which is inscribed’A Token of Esteem to Mr [perhaps Jas and short for James] Anderson Nov 7th 1845. The dating is quite handy as this item does not appear to have a hallmark which is not uncommon for these items. The inside of the mull has a base plate to prevent the snuff going down too far. This is not particularly unusual but in this case it appears to be a Queen Anne period silver shilling, which certainly is rare. Unfortunately the coin is quite rubbed and I can’t make out the date. Some silver Queen Anne shillings were minted in Edinburgh and this may be the connection here with this item. The date of the coin, being early 1700’s, significantly pre dates the mull so was retasked for use in this item. A very nice large example with a substantial silver lid and the very interesting early coin inset. Normal minor wear and rubbing of the silver. Normal age related light scuffs and scratches to the body and one small patch of horn surface flaw or repair – see image 8. Normal wear to interior and early inset coin is very rubbed.
