This instrument is in very good condition and plays very well. The valves move well with good compression and the slides all move of course. As for the aesthetic condition of the instrument, there are a few small dings and pings as well as a few isolated areas of light scratching and etching. The inside of the bell flare has some scratching, light etching, and pitting over most of its surface. The bell engraving reads: KING/ KING/ MUSICAL/ INSTRUMENTS/ U. ” The leadpipe has “1159 stamped into the mouthpiece receiver. The minor flaws are visible in the pictures, and none of them affect the playability of the horn. This instrument has been professionally cleaned in our shop, and repaired to full playability. This horn is not lacquered; therefore fingerprints should be wiped off after use if the player wishes for the horn to stay as shiny as it is now; if they are not wiped off then the horn will develop a lovely “raw brass” patina over time. This instrument comes with a somewhat worn case, and a mouthpiece for play-testing purposes. How the horn plays. Full and crisp sound with a bright and clear tone. The horn is quick and plays with good accuracy and flexibility. All registers of the horn speak well and play evenly across the range. The F and Bb side timbre and intonation match well. This is a very nice King 627 silver upright bell baritone with case. It is serial number 702114. That would make it about 1980 or so. It is in playing condition. The silver finish is beautiful. As happens in a big case the mouthpiece and come out of its position and rolled around in the case. It is called “case rash”. This horn has it. You can see in the pictures. It is on the tubing and the bell. The horn sounds great and will be a great travel horn. The bell is just over 11 inches across. This is a great horn for a student or a professional travel horn.
