A tendency has existed to regard most, if not all, turquoise products from Central Asia, particularly those of high quality the pure light sky-blue and the darker light-blue as the objects of Iranian origin. But it is not completely right. Medieval documents inform us that several turquoise deposits were quarried in the territories of modern Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, and Uzbekistan. For example, turquoise gemstones have been extracted from the Sultan-Uiz-Dag deposit in the northwestern end of Uzbekistan since the 1st century A. Currently, Uzbekistan industrially exploits more than 30 turquoise deposits, including the deposits Tebin-Bulak and Sultan-Uiz-Dag at the Sultan-Uiz-Dag Ridge, the deposits Ak-Turpak, Almalyk, and Ungurlikan at the Kuraminskiy Ridge, the Ayakashi and Jaman-Kaskyr deposits in the Bukantau Mountains, the Taskazgan deposit at the Tamdytau Ridge, and the Auminza deposit in the Auminzatau Mountains. The volume of extracted rough turquoise material for these deposits vary from 14 up to 95 gm/m3. Since the late-1950s, Uzbekistan has been the main supplier of turquoise gemstones for the USSR jewelry sector. Turquoise from Uzbekistan has been identified in over 40 different colors of blue and green with chocolate and gold brown matrix; colors often run together in the same stone.
