Fine Antiques & Jewellery. A Victorian carved (bovine) horn beaker with a silver rim mount by Sampson Morden & Co. It is beautifully carved with flowers and birds. The silver rim has a griffin head chased to the front. The base of the beaker is an inset glass disc which is an interesting feature. The hallmarks are a little rubbed but can be made out as for London 1882. The style is influenced the the Aesthetic movement and the design flows nicely with the natural material. The silver rim was made to fit the horn and undulates and is raised on one side. A rare and interesting item. There is an obvious indent to the rim at one point. Minor wear to the body. This stick features a light bovine horn top, furnished with a silver collar which is hallmarked:’London 1876′ Solid malacca cane shaft and an original bovine horn ferrule. Measurements: Total length – 83cm Width of the top – 4cm Width of the shaft (under the top) – 2.1cm 205g. Early in the 20th century, Malacca was referred to as the King of Canes. Malacca is one species of rattan (Calamus Ascipionum) found on the coast of Sumatra. Rattan palms have long, slender stems, and were perfect for the making of walking sticks. The stem is not round, but has a ridge or spine, often called a “tear-drop, ” running along its length. Very light-weight, yet very strong, With a good flex for comfortable walking yet like a bamboo unbreakable. With no two specimens being alike. The stem is made up of links with joints or nodes at both ends like bamboo, but is not hollow like bamboo. The bark is strong, with what appears to be a satiny, natural gloss or surface glaze.
