I have been playing this one very sparingly and cannot justify leaving it in the case un-played. These horns are just fabulous in their intonation and slotting through the player’s range. The Vintage One was designed for Conn by renowned designer Fred Powell, who now offers Powell trumpets on his website. The Vintage One is designed to provide the sound offered by the Conn 8b and 38b trumpets, trumpets played by iconic players in the early days of jazz and bebop jazz, including Freddie Hubbard, Cat Anderson, Woody Shaw, and Lee Morgan. If you have ever listened to recordings by these artists, you know what I mean. In playing my Vintage Ones in a big band setting or in a concert band setting, I find that the horn blends well with other horns and really shines when playing solos. In fact, a number of fellow musicians have switched to Vintage Ones after hearing me pay mine due to the fabulous tone it can generate. The horn comes with a Double Case and comes with a modular valve weight set that allows you to change the horn’s response plus two main tuning slides, a “D” style and a rounded style. The rounded tuning slide is shown on the horn. I find the rounded version allows for easier playing, but that is my opinion. The plating is very good except for a small discoloration about. 5 on the top of the back of the bell. This discoloration is shown on one of the photos. In addition, there is a small dent on the lead pipe that is superficial and does not extend into the lead pipe. Again, this is show on one of the photos. There are no other dents on the horn (except the one mentioned) – it is not a new horn, however, and has signs of use by putting it in and out of a case as any horn will have when played.
