The 8D is Conn’s large bore professional symphony double horn, and is usually built from solid nickel silver in a Kruspe wrap style. This horn is the 8DRS variant, and has a bell, 1st branch, and leadpipe all of which are made from rose brass for a warmer, fuller tone. This horn also features a screw-bell configuration, so the bell is detachable for easy storage. The valves move well with like-new compression and the slides all move of course. As for the aesthetic condition of this horn, t. Here are a few miniscule dings on the inner wrap as well as a few light scratches. The bell engraving reads: C. / CONN/ 8D/ Made in/ U. The minor imperfections are visible in the pictures, and none of them affect the playability of the horn. This instrument has been professionally cleaned in our shop and repaired to full playability. The horn is responsive, open, and well-balanced. The horn is capable of playing a wide dynamic range with a round, full, and powerful quality. The horn does not break up or become brassy at extreme volumes but is also capable of playing very softly while maintaining its fullness. All registers of the horn speak well and play fluidly. RARE medieval knightly silver button with HERALDIC HORNED HELMET
Medieval gilt silver button heraldically decorated with a knightly horned great helm (with 3 dots decorating each horn) inside dotted circle. Hemispheric shape with a loop attached, front face slightly concave. Gold gilt visible especially on the front face. Size 12 mm diameter, 10 mm thickness including loop, weight 0.91 grams. Probably from the German or Austrian area. A horned great helm of a somehow similar type. (dated around 1350 AD) is kept at Kunsthistorisches Museum in Wien and belonged to Albert von Pranckh. These buttons made of precious metals and decorated with heraldic devices were fashionable among noblemen and knights around the middle of the 14. They were carefully made by jewelers not for everyday use but to decorate the ceremonial outfit of the high birth persons, and as such sometimes accompanied them in their tombs (fairly similar silver buttons but bearing a heraldic shield or letters were found inside one of the mid-14th century tombs from Arges princely church in Wallachia – google it). Obviously only a handful of buttons with a peculiar heraldic design was made upon request for a certain nobleman, this explains why these ornate buttons are rarely found today.
