HORN BUTTON with Silver & MOP Inlay, 1800s Beautiful Intricate BIRD Design LARGE
Vintage antique clothing button was produced in the 1800s. The central image is of a bird — it almost looks like a vulture — surrounded by branches and leaves. The button is made of some sort of horn or shell. It has been inlaid with silver, brass and colorful pieces of mother-of-pearl. Please refer to the ruler pictured in the image for the exact button size. Overall condition: Solid VG….. The main piece of silver inlay has buckled somewhat — most noticeable around the central portion of the bird. This was likely caused by the horn material shrinking with age, leaving the silver inlay piece too large for the opening. I would guess that this was not an uncommon problem on larger horn buttons with inlaid design. The button may have also tarnished a bit with age, or have slight surface wear — but there are no cracks, chips, or other major flaws in the horn. It is otherwise in very nice shape and it will display quite well. See attached photos for more detail on the condition — and a close-up of the buckled portion of the silver.
