Silver and Brass Music Shop is a brick-and-mortar brass instrument restoration and repair shop located in Carson City, NV. This is a custom Bb single horn. This horn is one of a series of horns that our shop built to experiment with different possible wraps and layouts for 4-valve single Bb horns. This particular horn was designed to be the most open and free-blowing horn possible, and also to be as lightweight as possible. Thus there are very few tight curves cluttering up the airstream, and the main body of the horn contains a grand total of 7 braces. This horn has a very big bell throat, which combined with a Conn 8D leadpipe gives it a powerful, full sound. The lack of backpressure and resistance means that it is also possible to play the horn very lightly and softly, meaning that the dynamic range of this horn is one of its strongest features. In the low register it has a lovely warm timbre, and in the high register it feels very open and free-blowing. If you would like to know what this horn sounds like then on YouTube. The bell on this horn is from a very early Conn 14D; the first few Conn 14D horns that were built appear to have been manufactured using NOS parts that Conn had lying around in their warehouses and wanted to use up. This bell appears to actually be an old Conn 28D bell, which means that it has the same dimensions as 1940s-1950s era Conn 8D bells, but made from yellow brass. The valve cluster appears to be an old 1930s C. It was NOS, and had never been used or fitted to a horn before I built this instrument. The slides are obviously custom-built and fitted to the valve cluster. The 4th valve on this horn is currently an F-extension valve, although it could easily be fitted with a stopping-valve half-step style slide upon request. The 1st branch is also an Elkhart-era Conn part, the leadpipe is detachable and is currently an Elkhart-era Conn 8D leadpipe (an H-series I believe). Being that almost all of the parts are vintage, there are some imperfections throughout the horn. There are a few small dings and pings, and there is some scratching and etching throughout the horn. The valves move well with very good compression and the slides all move of course. The minor flaws are visible in the pictures, and none of them affect the playability of the horn. This horn is not lacquered; therefore the horn will develop a lovely “raw brass” patina over time. All horns are located at Silver & Brass Music Shop. This horn is an excellent Elkhart 8D, SN 918615. It has had a long, but good life, and is still in excellent working condition. The valves have good compression. The original leadpipe was replaced with a Lawson FB-110-125 leadpipe. The bell has been cut, and the flare was replaced with a custom flare by Atkinson Brass in California. The finger paddles have beautiful, excellent 1943 dimes professionally installed. I personally play an 8D, and this is one of the better Elkhart horns that I have played. The sound is huge and dark. The Lawson pipe and Atkinson flare have added a good deal of flexibility and power to the horn. The soft side of the volume is clear and easy. The louds are powerful. The tone is even between registers, and all registers play easily. This is a fantastic professional instrument that has many years of service left in it if cared for well. The metal of the horn is still in good shape. There is some minor evidence of removal of dents from the bell flare. There are some minor dents in the 3rd valve slide (Bb side), but nothing deep and nothing that is affecting tone. They are easily removable. I might remove them, and if I do, I will update the listing. Included is a very nice ProTec ProPac screw-bell case. It is used but in good condition.
