The Worshipful Company of Masons was formed in 1515 by the Alderman of the City of London. It ranks as number 30 in the list of Ancient Livery Companies of the City and exists to this day promoting the skills and craft of stone masons. This libation cup is a rare survivor and is crafted from a single cow horn mounted with unmarked silver (tested). The closed end carries an engraved seal showing the arms of the Masons Livery Company, three castles intersected by a chevron carrying a stonemasons’s compasses. The open end carries a mounted silver rim with simple engraved decoration. This “drinking horn” will date from the mid eighteenth century and were used as a ceremonial items. I have been involved in the antiques business since 1971. My career took a leap forward when I joined Bonhams in 1976. Some five years later I became head of the Decorative Arts department.
