Hand forged dirk style steel blade, looks like some maker’s mark near the cross guard. The handle is polished animal horn (I have no idea what manner of beast, but it is smooth and beautiful), the fittings I was told are silver. The cross guard is steel. The scabbard is a new creation but the previous owner told me the blade dates back to the 19th century. I have no reason to doubt that as the quality is awesome. Feels great in the hand, and looks like it would do some serious business in a hurry. Edge is is moderately sharp. I have never put it to a stone, so that will be the new owner’s joy. This blade would be right at home on the frontier, in the field, or in your boot as you roll your war rig across the highways of the Wasteland that is post-industrial America. Here is THE ONE for your black-powder pistol shooting!!! Before I go any further, YES there are literally hundreds of powder horns on E-Bay and many other sites. Many of them are cheap (and sadly most often poorly made) and if this is what satisfies you go no further! This beauty is for the discerning shooter/collector who wants a beautiful yet collectible item and that will be the centerpiece of your collection of black powder accessories for years to come! I used to shoot black powder and used 2 different grades of powder, 2F for the 50 Cal. Rifle and 3F for the various pistols that I shot. These 2 grades of powder always seemed to work the best for the 2 different types/caliber guns. Thus I had 2 different powder dispensers. One was a large horn for the 2F and a small flask for the 3F powder. This smaller horn is for the 3F for your pistol or light caliber rifle. The horn itself is a beautiful exotic Springbok horn from Africa. I consider it to be one of the most beautiful woods in the world!!! It has been treated with Aqua Fortis. This is the same treatment that the old style Kentucky style rifles that had tiger maple stocks. The Aqua Fortis is applied to the wood and then has a red hot piece of iron passed over it and the pattern literally jumps out at you!!! I do a lot of this type of finish and it never ceases to amaze me when the pattern emerges. The pour spout and the end cap filler plug are lathe turned from solid brass. The pour spout is very tight to prevent loss in the field. The end filler plug is threaded 1/2 28 TPI. The end is deeply knurled to make it easy to open. On the rare Springbok horn there is a highly detailed. 925 Sterling Silver standing Grizzly bear with bright yellow Citrines in the eyes. The ends have machined grooves to attach the strap of your choice for carrying. The shape of the horn makes it fit your right hand like a custom glove!!! Fred is a beautiful 17 in western saddle custom made by Broken Horn. If you want to learn more about Broken Horn look them up online and youll see they are up with the best. This is the finest quality leather I have ever seen on a saddle. It is supple and has always been well cared for. This saddle is completely ready to go to work in every way. Overall the saddle is in very good shape- it is a used saddle with normal wear marks but still a real eye catcher. It is fully basket weave tooled all over, including both sides of the stirrups, straps, fenders, rear cinch, etc. The silver (solid, not plated) is fantastic and still shines. It has silver engraved conchos and buttons with gold colored trim. Also a full size silver engraved horn cap (slight dent on outer edge). There are a few surface scratches on the right side rear skirt edge from a tree branch. You can see them in the picture. It has a very comfortable seat with a nice neutral position. Seat has some minor surface cracking in the leather (please see photos). Also the very front leading edge of the seat is no longer stitched onto the saddle but this in no way effects the utility or riding (not visible or noticeable). If you look you can also see where the saddle has holes to attach britchen. Fred is a heavy duty saddle and weighs in at a solid 50 pounds. I included a picture of the gullet measurement for sizing. You can also see that the sheepskin is in good shape too. There is a serial number stamped 2380.
