Here is a vintage serial number. 604486 Holton H-279 “Farkas” double french horn. His instrument was originally developed and designed by Philip Farkas in the 1950s. The Holton 279 is identical to the Holton 179 double french horn except that it has a screw bell configuration. The horn started life as a standard Holton 179 double french horn, and has been upgraded to a screw bell configuration. This instrument is in very good condition, and plays well. The valves move well with excellent compression and the slides all move of course. As for the aesthetic condition of this horn, t. Here are a few very small dings and pings as well as a few areas of light, isolated pitting, scratching, and etching throughout. The bell has been converted to screw bell using an Alexander compatible ring. The trigger has also been modified with a larger and more comfortable thumb paddle. The bell engraving reads: HOLTON/ ELKHORN. The leadpipe has: H179 stamped on the mouthpiece receiver. The minor imperfections are visible in the pictures, and none of them affect the playability of the horn. This instrument has been professionally cleaned in our shop and repaired to full playability. This horn is not lacquered; therefore fingerprints should be wiped off after use if the player wishes for the horn to stay as shiny as it is now; if they are not wiped off then the horn will develop a lovely patina. Mes with a somewhat worn ProTec briefcase style screw-bell case, and a mouthpiece for play-testing purposes. How the horn plays. Full, dark and mellow sound with a smooth, even tone. The horn is responsive, open, and flexible, playing across the range fluidly and evenly. All registers speak very well and lock in with good accuracy.
