Pair of Very Unusual and Beautiful Sculptures of Ceramic, Silver and Turquoise
Here are a pair of small black ceramic sculptures with hand giving the Devils Horn Gesture to ward off evil. In other asian cultures it has a completely different meaning. In American it means rock on. Since these pieces are not signed I can find no research on these. I found them in an antique shop in LA over ten years ago and thought they were so unusual I bought them. They make a great accent piece to your home decor. Sterling bands wrap around the arms with a Persian turquoise cabochon stone set in an 18k small ring (tested). Great conversation pieces and you won’t find another set like these I assure you. The shell usually belong to the classes Cypraecassis rufa, the Cassis madascarensis, and Cassis Horned because these shells of the family of Cassis consists of two distinct layers of color on the surface. This color formation allows an artist to isolate clearly a figure in relief from the bottom. A cameo is handcrafted in the following process. The first phase of the process is the choice of suitable all’incisione shell. Next is scoppatura or the cutting of the convex part of the shell, called the cup. The next phase involves the marking and shaping of the piece cut. In this phase there may be, in the cup, the drawing of the contours of cameo. In this phase also there will be the cutting and deletion of unnecessary parts. Next is all’aggarbatura in which the piece receives its shape (usually oval or round). The artist uses a special grinder. The piece is then placed for a time on warm wood. A mastic composed of Greek pitch, wax and canary grass is mixed. The use of this mastic is scrostatura that involves the abrasion of the outermost part of the shell while leaving the surface layer with a clear impact.
