I have for sale this lovely Antique Walking Stick with a Horn Handle and Silver Collar. The makers mark I cant read the first letter possibly a W, V and a H. Has a metal stopper on the bottom. Horn and Silver Mounted Ebony Walking Cane with Ornate twisted Shaft. Fine and unusual, Ebony Walking Cane, with Horn handle and silver mount. The Ebony shaft is patterned and twisted throughout, finished with a green horn handle and a monogramed silver band beneath, it retains its original Brass Metal Ferrule. The Silver band is not hallmarked, nor does it have the makers mark. The Cane is in Good Antique Condition with light surface marks, scratching and a few dings to the metal work in keeping with age and use. The horn handle is damage free and well coloured, there is surface scratching and filler build-up around the join of the metal mount. The Wood is strong, straight, and sturdy, though there is scuffing and two tiny old holes into the wood. The original Ferrule is large and secure, but heavily discoloured. Overall Measurements: Height 84.5 Width x 10.5 cm (tapering to 1 cm). Height 6.5 x Width 10.5 x Depth 2.5 cm. H 5.5 cm. The item is in good condition, please see the full report above. Victorian Walking Stick With Bovine Horn Toff Handle & H/m Silver Collar 1892. This lovely walking stick features a bovine horn toff handle, furnished with a silver collar which is hallmarked:’Birmingham 1892′ Strong malacca shaft and an original horn ferrule Measurements Length – 92cm Diameter of handle – 3cm Shaft diameter – 2.3cm tapering to 1.8cm. Early in the 20th century, Malacca was referred to as the King of Canes. Malacca is one species of rattan (Calamus Ascipionum) found on the coast of Sumatra. Rattan palms have long, slender stems, and were perfect for the making of walking sticks. The stem is not round, but has a ridge or spine, often called a tear-drop, running along its length. Very light-weight, yet very strong, With a good flex for comfortable walking yet like a bamboo unbreakable. With no two specimens being alike. The stem is made up of links with joints or nodes at both ends like bamboo, but is not hollow like bamboo. The bark is strong, with what appears to be a satiny, natural gloss or surface glaze.
