Wichita Band Instrument Company. Holton model H-281; serial number #471681 (made in early 1970’s). The horn has 90% original lacquer finish with nickel-silver mouthpipe and a detachable gold brass bell. This one is an early H-281 that’s never been school-owned and has come to us in very good original condition; original valves are still tight. It is a good player and not expensive! It comes with an original case that is perfect. The H-281 is the Holton model that was the basis for Barry Tuckwell’s H-104/ H-105. This one looks and plays like new! Silver and Brass Music Shop is a brick-and-mortar brass instrument restoration and repair shop located in Carson City, NV. This is a custom Bb single horn. This horn is one of a series of horns that our shop built to experiment with different possible wraps and layouts for 4-valve single Bb horns. This particular horn was designed to be responsive and light in style. The bell is a little bit heavier than the other horns in this series to give the horn more focus, and the 1st and 3rd slides have each had a knuckle removed to open up the airflow. This horn has a fairly small bell throat, which helps to give it a very light and direct sound with good projection. The horn feels very open, even when all four valves are depressed. The timbre tends toward the bright end of the spectrum. The left hand position is comfortable for large-handed people, but might be a stretch for people with smaller hands. The trigger has a very light throw, and it is designed to be quite springy and flexible. This makes it feel somewhat strange, as it is not like any 4th valve on other horns, but it is quite comfortable to use. If you would like to know what this horn sounds like then on YouTube. White valve cluster from 1947 with Holton valve caps, and the horn has 1920s-era German pfennig coins on the finger buttons for better grip. The 1st branch is from a. And the horn has a “Lafleur” bell. The leadpipe is a custom “Accusonic” style leadpipe, which gives surprisingly good warmth and responsiveness. Here is some more information about this type of leadpipe. Being that almost all of the parts are vintage, there are some imperfections throughout the horn. There are a few small dings and pings, and there is some scratching and etching throughout the horn. The valves move well with good compression and the slides all move of course. The minor flaws are visible in the pictures, and none of them affect the playability of the horn. This horn is not lacquered; therefore the horn will develop a lovely “raw brass” patina over time. Silver and Brass Music Shop is a brick-and-mortar brass instrument restoration and repair shop located in Carson City, NV. This is a custom mini Bb single horn. This horn is one of a series of little horns that our shop built for the purpose of taking hiking, or possibly for travelling. They are very compact and can easily fit in a piece of luggage or a backpack. Those horns are just bent trumpets, pitched in high Bb and made to look like little french horns. Occasionally you will see other similar horns pitched in F-alto, a full octave higher than a standard horn in F. These little horns are pitched in Bb tenor, the same as the Bb side of a double horn. The first picture of the horn shows it next to a regular full-sized double horn for size comparison reasons. These horns have been designed to be as compact as possible, while at the same time sounding as much as possible like a full-sized horn. And here is a link to all of the videos on our channel. This horn was built using a variety of parts, with the emphasis being on keeping the horn small but giving it a big, warm sound. The bell on this horn is detachable, and the flare is a vintage Conn trombone bell. The main valve cluster is Elkhart-era Conn single horn valves from 1963 with customized slides, and the 4th stopping valve is a vintage F. Olds & Son valve from 1965. The 1st branch and most of the internal tubing are also Elkhart-era Conn parts, and the leadpipe is a solid nickel silver F. Olds & Son leadpipe. Being that almost all of the parts are vintage, there are some imperfections throughout the horn. There are a few small artifacts on the bell tail and the 1st branch from the rebending that was required to reduce the diameter of the instrument, and there is some scratching and etching throughout the horn. The valves move well with good compression and the slides all move of course. The minor flaws are visible in the pictures, and none of them affect the playability of the horn. This King 1122 Marching French Horn is in good playing condition. This is a good solid horn with a nice finish. There are some minor cosmetic imperfections in the finish of this horn, like small dings, some scratches, and imperfections in the silver plating. These cosmetic imperfections do not hamper this good player. The piston valves and tuning slides work well with smooth action. This horn has been run through our shop, oiled and lubed, and put into good playing condition. Our repair technicians also replaced the water key corks. All sales are final.
