Vintage Holton H-76 Double French Horn in F/Bb with Case and Mouthpiece
Silver and Brass Music Shop is a brick-and-mortar brass instrument restoration and repair shop located in Carson City, NV. This is a vintage (serial number 395691) Holton model H-76 double french horn. This instrument is very similar in wrap and design to the Lorenzo Sansone #5, but in manufacture and construction it is a Holton. It is an unusual double horn in that the Bb slides are on top of the F slides, rather than underneath. This does not alter the way that the horn plays–it is still a normal full double french horn. It just means that it is possible to access both sets of slides more easily. The valves move well with very good compression and the slides all move of course. As for the aesthetic condition of this horn, there are a few small dings and pings as well as areas of pitting, etching, and scratching throughout. There is a reinforcing patch and a soldery repair on the main tuning slide, and a reinforcing guard has been added to an exposed location on the inner wrap. Quite a few of the braces on this horn have also been replaced. The bell tail has some waviness from dent removal. The leadpipe has been replaced with a more modern Holton leadpipe from a Holton Model H-178 “Farkas”. The bell engraving reads: FRANK’HOLTON & CO. / 76/ ELKHORN, WIS. The minor imperfections are visible in the pictures, and none of them affect the playability of the horn. This instrument has been professionally cleaned in our shop and repaired to full playability. This horn is not lacquered; therefore fingerprints should be wiped off after use if the player wishes for the horn to stay as shiny as it is now; if they are not wiped off then the horn will develop a lovely patina. This instrument comes with a somewhat worn hardshell case, and a mouthpiece in good condition. How the horn plays. Full, warm and dark sound with a smooth, even tone. All registers of the horn speak well and play fluidly. The horn plays with good flexibility. All horns are located at Silver & Brass Music Shop.
