This is a Georgian Solid Silver Scottish Snuff Mull Horn, this i believe to have been crafted c1800 making it around 218 years old, this isnt Hallmarked but that isnt unusual for these Scottish Snuff Horns of this Period but the Thistle on the Lid does test for Solid Silver but the Collar could be a Base Metal, this really is a Stunning Snuff Horn with the most Beautiful Colours on the Horn of Light Brown and Darker Brown, and the Horn has a lovely Curl at the End. It has a White Metal Mount to the Neck, with a nice Silver Thistle design on the Lid, the Lid does have a curve to it and the Cork to the underneath might not be Original and has wear to the Cork, the Hinge is Strong and the Lid closes nice and tight but because of the Curve in the Lid is not Flush and a little mis aligned and looks like there might be an old repair on the hinge to the collar, This would have been owned by someone Wealthy in the Georgian Period and this Snuff Horn would have meant something special in the Family Clan in Scotland, this really is an important piece of History, condition is good on the Horn and the Silver with tarnish on the Collar and on the Thistle, this would make a lovely gift. A stunning 19th century Scottish Horn Snuff Mull. The snuff mull is made of a horn, curled at the end. It has a sterling silver band on the upper part with silver hinge and domed lid. Lid is beautifully decorated with engravings and adorned with purple Amethyst in ridged bezel cup. Inside of lid is still attached the bung, made of cork. Lid still closes firmly. Silver is not hallmarked, which is common for these types of silver applications to horns. 9cm/ 3.5 inch long by 8cm/ 3inch at its widest point. Diameter Lid: 4.5cm/. 1534 Scottish Horn Snuff Mull. A large and particularly interesting Scottish snuff mull. It has a curled rams horn body and is set with a substantial silver lid which has chased and repousse work of thistles. The top is set with a large stone which is perhaps a citrine. There is also a dedication plaque in the shape of shield which is inscribed’A Token of Esteem to Mr [perhaps Jas and short for James] Anderson Nov 7th 1845. The dating is quite handy as this item does not appear to have a hallmark which is not uncommon for these items. The inside of the mull has a base plate to prevent the snuff going down too far. This is not particularly unusual but in this case it appears to be a Queen Anne period silver shilling, which certainly is rare. Unfortunately the coin is quite rubbed and I can’t make out the date. Some silver Queen Anne shillings were minted in Edinburgh and this may be the connection here with this item. The date of the coin, being early 1700’s, significantly pre dates the mull so was retasked for use in this item. A very nice large example with a substantial silver lid and the very interesting early coin inset. Normal minor wear and rubbing of the silver. Normal age related light scuffs and scratches to the body and one small patch of horn surface flaw or repair – see image 8. Normal wear to interior and early inset coin is very rubbed. It has a Solid Silver Round Raised Mount to the Neck, with a nice Band design around the edge of the Lid, the Hinge is Strong and the Lid closes nice and tight, the Silver Collar on the neck of the Horn still retains a little Gilt to it, and the inside of the Lid has its original Gold Gilt and looks Beautiful with the Rounded section on the inside Lid, on the outside of the Lid is Clear Stone applied to the Finial with a Floral Framing around the edge of the Stone, underneath there is a Crest of a Griffon of the Clan Macgregor or Gregor with the Word COURAGE.
